“Michael Bourne, author of 'We Bring You an Hour of Darkness ', joins us at Cafe Books on 7th of February 12 pm-4pm for an exciting book signing!

It’s 1993, and the ski company that runs Franklin, Colorado, plans to build a massive new resort in a pristine wilderness home to an endangered wildcat. When eco-terrorists begin a series of attacks on infrastructure and property, the FBI sets up a national task force. While the local police and politicians are melting down, five intrepid reporters at the town’s struggling newspaper must step in to solve the crime. With her newspaper on the brink of collapse, editor Tish Threadgill is under pressure from a rival publication to sell. But a local literary malcontent turns out to have a ringside seat to the eco-terrorist plot. Audrey Blake - Author Signing

“Audrey Blake, author of 'All in Her Hands' joins us at Cafe Books on 28th of February 12 pm-4pm for an exciting book signing!

One woman physician. A group of talented midwives. A deadly disease spreading.

1849. Dr. Nora Gibson is the only female surgeon in London. In all of England, even. After earning her medical degree and overcoming the prejudice of those who wished to see her fail, she's finally earned her place at the Great Queen Street Hospital alongside her newlywed husband and her eccentric but ailing adoptive father, the great Dr. Horace Croft.

But peace is hard to come by as a physician, and for one like Nora, it's almost impossible. When Nora takes up the fight to bring midwives into the medical field, her already fragile reputation comes under fire by colleagues and London society itself. And if the possibility of losing her rights to practice medicine wasn't enough, a dangerous enemy has made itself known: the deadliest cholera epidemic in over a century. It's a swift disease that wreaks havoc and tragedy across the city, especially amongst the working classes, and Nora will do anything she can to help. Soon, she finds herself on the frontlines of the disease, and as those around her begin to fall, she'll have to find the strength to stand alone and maintain her greatest oath: to save lives. Whether she'll make it through, though, is up to fate.”

A Place Just For Me - Children's Book Signing with Monica Meneghetti

“Join local translator, Monica Meneghetti, at Cafe Books for an exciting signing of the children's book 'A Place Just For Me'.

An adorable picture book for young readers about the importance of finding a quiet spot to ourselves where we can think, dream, and just be.

Silver is the youngest mouse in a big family. He’d love to have a quiet spot all to himself to do what he likes best: absolutely nothing! But it is almost impossible in his burrow. His noisy siblings are playing ball, dancing, and listening to music. His parents are busy cooking, building gadgets and reading books.

What should Silver do? He tries to find refuge in the burrows belonging to his forest friends, but finding a place all to himself is harder than he thought.

Filled with stunning illustrations, A Place Just For Me is a charming reminder of honoring our own spaces and finding a quiet spot to think in our busy world.”

Gail Sidonie-Sobat - Author Signing

“Join us at Cafe Books for an exciting book signing of 'Songs From This and That Country' by Gail Sidonie-Sobat 12-4pm on Saturday 1st November.

'Songs from This and That Country' is an inter-generational story that examines the reality of age-old ethnic conflicts between Serbs-Croats-Muslims, exposing these divisive and acrimonious relationships as recursive and mirrored in the lives of first- and second-generation families. As a blend of family drama, historical fact and fairy tale, Songs reflects a South Slavic immigrant experience, WWII infantry service in 1940s Italy, the Bosnian conflicts in the 1990s, and the rise of a second generation Serb-Canadian opera singer–all set in relief to a Slavic fairy tale in the time of the Ottoman Empire.”

Author Visit with Kevin Tighem - Canmore Public Library

“Join us for an evening with Kevin Van Tighem as he presents his latest work Understory: An Ecologist’s Memoir of Loss and Hope.

When: Thursday, October 30  |  6:30pm
Where: Friends Program Room

Understory is a deeply personal and evocative journey into the complexities of nature, grief, and the search for meaning in the autumn of life. Drawing on a lifetime spent in the wilds of western Canada’s national parks and years of conservation work, Van Tighem reflects on a career spent protecting the natural world and the emotional toll of witnessing its decline. Freed from bureaucratic constraints after retirement, he turned to writing, activism, and politics, driven by a sense of duty to the landscapes and species he loves. But alongside his commitment to action came profound grief and the pressing question: how do we find hope amid environmental loss?

Written with the lyricism of a naturalist and the candour of a seasoned storyteller, Understory invites readers to confront their own relationships with nature and consider how they, too, can find purpose and hope in uncertain times.

Kevin Van Tighem is a former superintendent of Banff National Park. He has written more than 200 articles, stories, and essays on conservation and wildlife which have garnered him many awards, including Western Magazine Awards, Outdoor Writers of Canada book and magazine awards, and the Journey Award for Fiction. He is the author of Bears Without Fear; The Homeward Wolf; Heart Waters: Sources of the Bow River; Our Place: Changing the Nature of Alberta; and Wild Roses Are Worth It: Alberta Reconsidered. He lives with his wife, Gail, in High River, Alberta. For more information about Kevin, please visit: https://kevinvantighem.ca/.

Author Visit with Bruce Hunter and Lorne Daniel - Canmore Public Library

“Join us for an evening with Bruce Hunter and Lorne Daniel as they present their works, In the Bear’s House and What is Broken Binds Us.

When: Tuesday, October 21  |  6:30pm
Where: Friends Program Room

In the Bear’s House by Bruce Hunter is a novel that tells the story of a creative young mother raising her deaf son against the insurmountable odds of poverty, mental illness, and hardship in Calgary and Alberta’s backcountry in the 1960s.

What is Broken Binds Us by Lorne Daniel is a collection of poems about the disruptions and emotional tremors that shape us: families broken and dispersed, the ancestry of slavery and conquest, addiction and estrangement, and the shocks of bodily trauma. The book shares stories of loss, absence, acceptance, and hope.

Bruce Hunter was born in Calgary on Treaty Seven lands. He was deafened as an infant and afflicted with low vision much of his adult life. After high school, Bruce worked as a labourer, equipment operator, Zamboni driver, and completed his technical education as a gardener and arborist. In his late twenties, his poetry earned him a scholarship to the Banff School of Fine Arts where he studied with novelist W.O. Mitchell and poet Irving Layton. Bruce went on to York University to study humanities and taught in the creative writing department before landing a position at Seneca College. He is an active writer, editor, speaker, and mentor. For more information about Bruce and his work, please visit: https://www.brucehunter.ca/.

Lorne Daniel is a Canadian of Scottish and American ancestry. His poetry and non-fiction have been widely published in Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. Lorne has been deeply engaged in the literary community since helping lead the emergence of a Canadian prairie poetry scene in the 1970s. He has written four books of poetry, edited anthologies and literary journals, and published freelance journalism. A veteran writer and editor, in recent years Lorne has chosen to “begin again as a novice,” through writing programs at a number of universities in the U.S. and Canada. For more information about Lorne and his work, please visit: https://www.lornedaniel.ca/

Some of The Facts, by Beth Everest is a collection of short stories about the post-WWII, pre-commercialization time in Jasper. It’s loosely based on tales Beth heard growing up in Jasper, with a blend of fact and fiction. As Beth says in her introduction, "I’ve even messed a bit with times that things may or may not have happened. And if someone recognizes themselves or others, or a particular happening. (All proceeds go for relief of the Jasper Fires courtesy of the author)

Bruce Hunter's In The Bear’s House, set in 1960s Calgary and Alberta ‘s backcountry, this reissue of In the Bear’s House tells the story of a creative young mother, Clare Dunlop, raising her deaf son against the insurmountable odds of poverty, mental illness and hardship. “Having trouble finishing your manuscript? Starting a term paper? Writing a long overdue love letter? Then this is the group for you! Canmore Writing Group is exactly what it sounds like: an opportunity for writers to start, continue, or finish written works.”

Meetings are informal and are held on Tuesdays from 6-8pm, at the large round table on the second floor above the lobby, at the Malcolm Hotel in Canmore.
